| the sky runners live on the peak of the tallest mountain that rises in the near center of their territory. a small lake sits at the juncture between their home mountain and the neighboring one, feeding a stream that runs down through the gap between the mountains and into the valleys. the mountains rise above the tree line, and the peaks are bare, but the valleys are green and lush, full of prey, herbs, and berries. the cats that reside there make their home on a flat outcropping about a quarter of a mile (.4 km) below the summit, making use of old gem mines that have been long since abandoned. a lot of sky runners tend to be named after the shiny rocks that mountain tunnelers find in their explorations in the mineshafts, or after the weather phenomena that fill the sky. as well, the camp glimmers and shines from the decorations that the cats have implemented around camp from their findings, and are known to be collectors of anything shiny, brightly colored, or otherwise interesting. they also make rudimentary dyes from berries they find growing in the valleys, and paint their fur with them. when a cat is born, theyre given a first name, and when they prove themselves as capable, fully grown adults, they go on a spiritual journey to figure out what their second name is. the name-journey is personal to each cat that goes on it, and the discovery of the name is akin to a gut feeling or an epiphany. it's also not too uncommon for a cat's ancestor to help nudge a cat in the right direction on their name when said cat has gone on their name-journey. the cats tend to sleep in the open, with only the leader figures, healers, queens and elders having dens to utilize, the rest of the commune feeling more comfortable sleeping under the stars. they will also have group-wide stargazes, trading stories about their ancestors, and recalling fond memories of those who passed before them. in the cold months, the cats will take shelter and sleep in the cave/mine systems until the snow melts and the warmer months come around again. sky runners tend to fall into one of two roles/archetypes, mountain tunnelers or cliff runners. cliff runners are sure-footed and quick, dashing along precipices that other cats wouldn't dare set foot towards with incredible speed and agility. theyre nimble and quick, and usually thin and lithe. theyre really hard to hit, let alone pin down. however, they're usually not super strong, and rely more on smarts and speed to fight their battles. mountain tunnelers are the opposite of cliff runners, as they're usually stocky and slow, but incredibly strong. they're unafraid to delve into the deepest of tunnels that run through the mountain that they call home, and bring back pretty rocks and trinkets that the sky runners covet. their diet consists mostly of birds of prey and their prey, predominantly rabbits and rodents. they also make use of the lake and the streams in their territory, fishing and swimming for fun. their general disposition is very fun-loving and airy, considering that they're the cats that reside the closest to the sky. they tend to come across as whimsical and kind of strange, but they're generally very kind and gracious. they're very much open to outsiders, always extending their kind nature to strangers that need a break on their journey through the mountains, or a home, provided they find that they want to stay. their camp has never been taken by enemy forces due to the harsh landscape that they live in, and their general isolation, and there have only been a handful of attempts to attack the group's camp in its history. their culture greatly embraces the vast expanse of the sky, and it's a great part of their culture to attempt flight, in hopes that one day they'll figure out how to fly. they speak of a legend, the cat that gave their colony its name, sky runner, the winged one. they hope to one day do what she did, transcend the boundaries of land and sky, and become creature of not just the land, but ones of the sky as well. they often wear the pelts of the birds of prey that they kill, so that if they were ever to gain wings like their founder did, they can. they have their own set of ancestors, cloud dancers, though the runners don't fully worship them, they treat them as long lost friends, and because the runner afterlife is much closer to the living world than starclan is (as the runner afterlife is a cloud city), the cloud dancers visit the runners more often and for much more trivial things. they also don't limit themselves to visiting leaders and healers, and it's not uncommon for a regular cat to dream of and have a chat with one of their deceased family or friends. the dancers are called such as the afterlife is seen as a large friendly gathering of all the cats that frolic and play, dancing through the sunlight that always shines on them. cloud dancers have wings, which lets them inhabit the clouds above, and the runners have adages and sayings that correspond with the weather. sunny, no clouds - "the [cloud] dancers must all be out hunting" partly cloudy - "the [cloud] dancers are busy building the city" overcast - "the [cloud] dancers are napping" rain - "the [cloud] dancers are in mourning" thunderstorm - "the [cloud] dancers are battling the great eagle" snow - "the [cloud] dancers are sharpening their claws" their origin legend: how sky runner got her wings - Spoiler:
In a copse of trees on an unassuming plain, a mother gave birth to her first litter. There were three kittens, two she-cats, and a single tom. In the first three moons, they lacked names, as the queen wished to give them names that truly represented their natures. One she-kit took to climbing the trees of the copse, as high as she could go before her mother would bring her down. Her sister took to ambling the plains outside the copse, and her brother kept to the trees, scouring the land for prey and herbs. They were then given names. The tree-climbing she-kit was named Sky, as she longed to be as close to it as she could. Her sister was named Heather, as she often came back from her wandering smelling of the sweet blooms, and the brother was named Sage, as he'd often return to their home with the fragrant leaves in tow. As the siblings grew older, they were allowed more freedoms, being allowed to roam further, climb higher, and hunt more. Life was good in the copse on the plain, and the family lived in peace for five more moons. By then, the trees were bare and the plain was blanketed with snow, the wind howling through the branches, reaching up into the sky. There she was, braving the cold as she clung to a branch, dreaming about the expanse of the sky above. It wasn't until talons gripped her, piercing her skin and ripping her from her daydream, that she noticed something was amiss, and she cried out a long, shrill plea for help as huge wings beat above her, carrying her further into the sky than she'd ever before dreamed of getting. A single look back gave Sky the image of her mother and two siblings looking on, frozen in horror. As the initial shock and fear wore off, the rhythmic beating of the eagle's wings were almost soothing to the kidnapped she-cat, and she found that the wind blowing through her fur and weightless sensation was enthralling. She could almost forget that she was being carried away to become the eagle's meal. The eagle flew for ages, it seemed, and Sky tried to memorize the route the bird took as it brought her back to its nest, but the land below was obscured by fog. The pair began their descent towards the eagle's home, and a small thrill coursed through her body as they gained speed, though she was jolted out of her haze by the eagle tossing her into its nest, ready to feed. Free and mostly unharmed, Sky put up a brave fight, using her slim build and speed to dodge most of the eagle's attacks, only taking one more slice to her flank. The eagle made one more move, lashing out at her with its beak, and Sky took advantage of the opening, slashing her claws across the eagle's face, skin ripping under her claws, and blood pouring into the bird's eyes. The eagle effectively blinded, Sky took her chance to escape, and escape she did. She tumbled out of the nest, wounds stinging and oozing bright red blood, and she scrambled for a footing, trying to find shelter against her attacker - and the elements. Soon, she heard the beating of wings behind her, and the angry screech of her wounded attacker. Fear coursing through her veins, she skidded through the snow, frantically trying to find anywhere she could shelter. Finally, she found a cave, the opening big enough for her, but too small for the eagle. She darted in, snow flying, and she skidded to a stop, shivering from not just fear, but the cold as well. Now that the immediate danger had been staved off, all of the emotions that she'd suppressed since being carried away overflowed. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she cried, covering her face as she wept about the loss of her family and her home, and all that she'd ever known. A voice broke the sobbing, and Sky looked up to see a marbled gray she-cat, whose muzzle was lined with white. the voice was rough, and crackly, as if from disuse. "What brings you here, stranger?" the old she-cat asked. At that, Sky spilled the story of her home, her family, and the events that led to her appearance, fighting back tears. The old she-cat shook her head, and murmured, "What a shame, to be separated from your family. But, you are in no condition to travel right now, stranger. Stay a while, and I will heal your wounds, teach you how to survive here, and when you're ready, you can return home." With nothing else to do, or to lose, Sky agreed. "What's your name?" Sky asked. "My name is Sky, I was named for my fascination with its vast expanse." "What a wonderful name, it suits you! My name is Mist. Now, let me tend to your wounds." With that, Mist healed Sky's wounds, taught her how to survive in the mountains that she was stuck in, and prepared her for the journey back home. When the time came, Sky, now fully grown, stood beside mist, looking over the ridges of the mountains that stood between her and her family, yet, she couldn't bring herself to leave. The crags and rough scrub and snow-capped peaks had become home to her, even more so than the copse of trees on the plain had. So, she turned to Mist, and murmured, "I can't leave. My heart has grown fond of this place, and if I were to leave, my soul would weep until I return." "Don't you want to find your family again?" Mist asked, cocking her head to the side. "Yes, but my work isn't done here yet. There is still something I must do before my paws can tread other paths. I don't know what it is, but I cannot leave yet." With a smile and a short chuckle, Mist spoke. "Well, for however long you spend here, you're welcome to stay with me." "Thank you, Mist, for everything." Sky purred. When the snow had melted and warmth was creeping back into the sunlight that shone on the gray stone and bare branches in the valleys below, Sky found herself running, and running, and running, and as if wings had sprouted from her back, she crossed crevasses, sped along narrow precipices, and ran up and over peaks, sure-footed and with grace. The former plains cat was now a true native of the mountains that she now called home, and soon, there was nowhere that she couldn't reach. On a particularly warm day, Sky had her sights set on a rabbit grazing on fresh spring grass on an outcropping. The she-cat slowly stalked it, paws set down as lightly as a feather as she crept towards it. The rabbit was completely unaware of her, and she prepared to pounce, until a shadow blotted out the sun, and a piercing screech split the air. Sky looked up to see a familiar face, marred with four long scars of her doing. The rabbit took off, and it forgotten, Sky spat at the eagle, thoughts of revenge filling her mind, and she lunged. Her claws dug into the eagle's chest, and she threw it to the ground, the eagle fighting to throw her off. She held on, dodging bites from its cruel beak, and she sunk her teeth into the great bird's neck, fighting to keep a hold as the bird thrashed and bucked. Its great wings beat the air around her, and struck her with intent to stun, but still she held fast, until the bird went still. Adrenaline coursing through her, she ran to the peak and yowled her triumph, celebrating her victory over the beast that had torn her life to pieces. She then returned to the eagle's body, and brought it back to Mist, where the pair ate off of it for several days. and when the eagle was picked clean, and all that remained was its pelt, Sky draped it over herself, and wore it as a trophy, celebrating how far she'd made it in life. With the eagle dead and her mission complete, Sky could now go back to find her family. "Mist, I'm going to find my family, and I'm going to bring them back, okay? I'm not leaving forever, I could never do that. My heart belongs here." "You've grown so much, Sky, I'm so proud of you. I want you to know that you're like a daughter to me, and that you're always welcome back here. now go, find your family. I'll be here." With tears welling up in her eyes, Sky pressed her head to Mist's. "Thank you, for everything. I'm proud to call you a mother of mine." "Of course, darling. I have one last thing to say, if you'll listen?" "Of course, Mist, what is it?" "I'd like to bestow upon you a new name. It won't replace the name you already have, but rather, it's an amendment. Because you've grown to love this place, and have learned to run it with so much ease, I'd like to give you the name, Sky Runner. You run the boundary between land and sky with so much ease, that at any moment you could lift off into the great blue expanse. I hope you like it, I thought about it for many nights, trying to think of the perfect name for you." The newly-named Sky Runner smiled and purred her gratitude as she rubbed her cheek against Mist's. "I love it, thank you, Mist. You're right, it's perfect." "I'm glad you love it. Now, go, find your family. I'll be here when you return." A single nod and a smile was exchanged between Mist and Sky Runner, and true to her name, she began to run, the wings of the eagle pelt catching the wind and lifting with the currents of air passing under it. As Sky Runner reached a peak, she leaped, the wings of the eagle pelt flaring out, and in that moment, the wings fused to her body, and no longer was she wearing the wings of an eagle, she was one with them. Her newfound wings caught the air underneath her and buoyed her up, and she couldn't help but laugh with pure joy, as her greatest wish had come true. She could now touch the sky like she'd always dreamed, and she was the happiest creature in the world. She crossed the leagues that the eagle had taken her with ease, soaring over the highest peaks and treetops below, until she caught sight of the rolling plain, and the oh-so familiar copse of trees that she'd been born in. She landed with the lightest of touches, and folded her new wings against her body, the appendages still warm from the flight. She pushed her way into the copse, calling out, "Mother? It's me, Sky! I didn't die when the eagle carried me away!" A figure then slunk out of the shadows, the familiar form of her mother. There were tears brimming in her eyes, and recognition swept over her as she caught sight of her daughter, thought to have been lost to the clutches of the eagle. "Sky... I never thought I'd see you again! When you got carried away, I... I was devastated. I'm sorry I didn't try harder to save you..." "No, mother, it's okay. I was saved by a kind cat called Mist, and I've lived with her for the past few seasons. I was carried to the mountains, that I grew to love. I wanted to find you, so that I could ask you to come back to the mountains with me, along with Heather and Sage." "Sky, I love you, of course I'll come with you. I waited here for as long as I did in hopes that if you did survive, that you'd find your way back. You did, and now, I'll follow you wherever." Sky Runner let out a purr and pressed her face to her long-lost mother's, when more voices chimed in. "Sky?" "Sis?" Sage and Heather pushed their way through the undergrowth, before rushing forward to greet her, just as their mother had. Sky Runner retold her story, and once again offered for them to come with her to the mountains that she called home. Without hesitation, both of her siblings agreed to go with, and without further ado, they all set off together. "So, what's with the pelt?" Heather asked. Sky Runner stretched her wings out, and responded, "They used to be a pelt, but now, they're my wings. I don't know what happened, but I wouldn't have it any other way, for now, I can touch the sky like I'd always dreamed of." "Wow, Sky, that's amazing!" Sage breathed. "Oh, and, the cat that I lived with all these moons gave me a new name. I'm not just Sky, I'm Sky Runner now, because I ran the boundary between land and sky with so much ease." "It's a perfect name, Sky Runner. Now, let's go to our new home." Their mother responded, with a smile. The quartet made it back to the mountains without any problems, and soon returned to Mist's cave. "Mist, I'm back!" Sky Runner called in as she entered. "Sky Runner! I'm so glad you're back! Did you find your family?" "Yep, and they've come back with me. I'm here to ask, would you like to join us? We found a nice outcropping with caves that are good for sleeping in and storing herbs and stuff. We'd love to have you live with us." "Of course, my dear. It'd be my pleasure." With that, the now-quintet set up their new life on the outcropping. Sky Runner continued to extend her kindness to any cat that needed help passing through the mountains, and a home for those who wished to stay. When Sky Runner grew old and frail, her life's work had been growing a community of cats based on love and kindness, and when she finally passed, peacefully in her sleep, the colony she'd grown took her name in her honor. From then on, they were called the Sky Runners, and they too strove to touch the sky just as she had.
